One of the first ideas about Italy I had to immediately revise when I first went there, was my idea of Italian romance. Italians are practical people, on the whole, especially in the North. This was brought home to me as soon as I got off the plane.

Like many people, I used to smoke cigarettes. After 25 hours on the plane from Sydney to Italy I was rather keen to light up a smoke. Unfortunately, the luggage from my plane had not presented itself at the carousel in the airport. I therefore could not proceed through customs to the free air outside for the much anticipated smoke. I had to wait inside where I could not see anywhere to smoke. So I asked the Guardia di Finanza officer, smartly dressed in grey uniform with red stripes down the trousers and peek cap. "Mi scusi, dove possiamo andare a fumare ?" The guard replied "Qui dietro l'angolo" and waved his arm towards a corner under a large non smoking sign. Seemed it was OK to smoke as long as no one saw me smoking. I still felt guilty smoking in the terminal, but no one gave me a second look.

Conclusion: there are many rules in Italy just like in any country, but in Italy business is not what you might expect going by the written rules and signs; traffic lights at pedestrian crossings for example.

It's no surprise then to find that doing business in Italy is very different to England, Australia or America. Italians for example will want to get to know you and your family first. This can take days, weeks or months and can be frustrating for everyone concerned at first, but wonderful once you surrender to the journey. Italians want to know who you are as a person, which is a great idea really. Something that I feel has often been lost in the rush of common law English speaking countries.

So if you only have a week or two to inspect properties in Italy that may interest you to purchase, you really need some help, otherwise don't be surprised if you don't get to see any houses remotely meeting your requirements within that time frame. Of course, much can get lost in translation and finding a great deal that is legitimate becomes more difficult. This is where we can help.
